"From North to South" Since that first accordion - the Hand Aoline- created by the German F. Buschmann in 1822 and to which, thirty years after Bouton added, in Paris, the keyboard, it has rain a lot…not only real rain but also blue rain…long sequences of sounds meant for evoking and for melancholy…sounds of tramp artists, of festive excitement at outdoor festival and fairs…sounds to illustrate the flow of the rain under the Parisian bridges. One day, forty years ago, the master Josu Loroño raised the accordion to a Concert status when he founded the Bilbao Symphonic Orchestra of Accordions. An Orchestra that nowadays his daughter Amagoia conducts with her outstanding talent. In consequence, the Record Music Company RNE had the opportune idea of editing a CD of this formidable orchestra, legitimizing , with this action, a peculiar way of music, created and recreate from a deep and rigorous artistic knowledge and a marvellous way of interpretation. "From North to South"-a very expressive title, by the way- transport us since the delicate and vibrant masterpiece of Guridi until the poetic behaviour of the paso doble (Martinez, Porlán, Lope, Alvarez) that not even the most famous band of the most renowned bullring could played it better……in between this two concepts, space and time to orchestrate with "stamp of the house" the popular tunes of "Boga-Boga"; to melt with the closeness of Albéniz; and to testify the authenticity of the Spanish operetta (Chapi, Soutullo and Vert, Alonso); in order to get identify with the southern sensuality that Bizet put on "Carmen"... Listening to this superb recording, one reassert on the reflection that if is true that all the arts are superlative, only Music permits us to penetrate to the deepest mystery of the world and of life, seized and enjoyed, to look afterwards for comfort towards our weakness and errors. Gala XL Anniversary THE BRAVE WINDS OF THE ACCORDIONS The classical Roman numeral gives way to a pun on words: the gala of the XL anniversary of the Bilbao Accordion Symphonic Orchestra had a greatness in a night full of sensations where the Guggenheim was packed with marvels. With the energetic baton of Amagoia Loroño, the opening ceremony marched in with musicians embracing their instruments, with that classical balance inviting everyone to the spirit of the fiesta. One would say that a tear down the cheeks of Jose Loroño was spotted, the man who committed his passion in making this adventure possible forty years ago, in the far 1963; well maybe the shadows of the auditorium, eager before the roar that originates from the entrails of a fascinating and singular orchestra or maybe that picture Jose Luis Arias draw near to him, both dressed as soccer players in a forties formation, who knows....
To the right hand side of Amagoia, Asier Loroño, attentive, running over his hand at the keys of the accordion, with great skilfulness. On the front rows, very touched, was Belen Greaves, councillor of the health department, Gabriel Inclan, Ibon Areso, Juantxo Lazpita, the cultural councillor Jon Sanchez and other political and musical authorities, as well as artistic and business personalities in a night to remember. Before hand, Mari Carmen Navarro and Joseba Iriondo have guided the night into a wonderland of sensations with the presentation of an emotional video and the keepsake of so much history. His words were appreciated by people like Luis Diaz de Lezana, Iñaki Irusta, Mario Ezquera, Attorney Txema Montero, doctor Usparicha - the soul, heart and life of the DYA, Joseba Iriarte, Cristina Zubiaga, Yolanda Uriarte, Javier Sojo, Maria Dolores Solaguren, Alicia Salaberria, Jose Alberto Pradera - knocked down by the train of unpunctuality and a good number of friends of the Loroño family including a huge group of friends from the music clan so widely extended on the four corners of earth. If one had to look for the north that night, maybe one would have culminated with the second piece performed. It was a polka of Strauss entitled "among thunder and lightning" that Amagoia Loroño has adapted for the accordion. The museum was then suddenly invaded by an intoxicated light which reached like a thunderbolt, Alfonso Carlos Saiz Valdivielso, Eusebio Abasolo, Amaia Fano, accompanied by her elegant mother, Amaia Zarragoitia, Txelu Aurtenetxe, Fernando Barrio, Pablo Bilbao, Quico Mochales, Jose Luis Merino, Juan Pablo Zubizarreta, Ignacio Grassa, Dolores and Gregori Arteaga and everybody else who wished to listen to the new version. It was with no doubt the hottest cardinal point of the night brushed with the mouth-watering cocktail dishes by Martin Berasategui where the brave winds of the accordion took us to the bygone days when listening to music without the haste chasing us was our daily bread. Jon Mujika Bilbao, Deia 21st November 2003 |
