Bilbao folk Alley Seeing them lining in a row and in full gale, an orchestra of accordions looks like a boat in the middle of a storm. The swinging of the accordionists, the audible wind that they take out from the paunch of their instruments, evoke the image of a sailing boat fighting against the elements of the nature. This is a visual sight worthy of admiration, further on each one's musical interest. This phenomenon could be contemplated yesterday in the Euskalduna Palace, during the concert of the Bilbao Accordion Symphonic Orchestra that was conducted by Amagioa Loroño and sounded as if the breaths of great composers blow up the pumps of each of the accordions. The concert, called "From North to South and from East to West" has been used for the recording of a new disc under the protection of the Group Nervión, where Bilbao Television and Nervión Radio were the king and the queen. The Orchestra, founded in 1963 by the maestro Josu Loroño, has grown and moves on along the years being considered today as one of the outstanding cultural heritage of the Villa. That's the reason why in 2005 Iñaki Azkuna, major of Bilbao, whom also attended yesterday to the concert, awarded them with the honorable distinction of distinguished of Bilbao, after being stated they have leave their mark everywhere they have gone. Dress up man in dark and women with bright colored satin skirts, the staging of the Orchestra, drive by the invisible threads that goes from the soul of Amagoia to each music stand, turn out to be amazing. The concert started vibrant with the prelude of 2º act of El Caserio, the immortal Zarzuela (Spanish Operetta) of the maestro Jesús Guridi. By then, the Palace Euskalduna stalls' showed the appearance of the great spring nights: full to bursting. Among the attendees one can stand up the presence of Enrique Campos, one of the driving forces of the communication group that manage, offstage, the show. But it wasn't the only one, of course. To the appointment also attended Txema Oleaga, Francisco Pontes, Beatriz Marcos, Luis Hermosa, Javier Ortega, Itxaso Mendizabal, Ángel Argote, Itxaso Marín, Yolanda Madariaga, Juan Antonio Ruiz, Francisco Mendiola, the hopeless megalomaniac Alfonso Carlos Sainz Valdivielso, who came with Marisa Bernuy, Rafael Ugarte, Gonzalo Menchaca, María Jesús González-Pinto, Begoña Urrutia, Fernando Mendibelzua, Javier Aranguren, the veterinarian Francisco Dehesa, Pablo Muñoz, Jon Sustatxa, Miguel Ángel Saberria, Carmen Redondo, Nazario Mendibil, Avelina Iglesias, Goio Urrutikoetxea, Cristina Muguruza, Ignacio Aldekoa, María del Carmen García, Xabier Ortuondo, Venancio Goikoetxea whom recalled the night festivals lived under the light of the summer fireworks while an accordion "enlivened the afternoons and token us till the night, when we had the courage enough to ask them to dance", Karmele Arakistain, Gloria Santamaría, Ainhoa Sánchez, Félix Orueta and a never ending list of names that attended at the inducement of good music. With a hurry walk due to the narrowness of the clock arrived, for example, the doctor Luis Alciturri with his sons Javier and Anne, this last one apprentice of the great master of accordionist. Everyone could notice the figure of Asier Loroño sure luck of a soloist inside the Symphonic Orchestra. Also came running at the last minute Mari Carmen Ortiz, Julen Zelaieta, Gontzal Arrospide, Ignacio Mendiguren, David Escalza, whom arrived with his partner, Itziar Olmos, to reduce considerably the average of age of the auditorium, with the excuse of the attendees, Daniel Gutiérrez, José Ignacio Peláez, Beñat Olabarria, Javier Feijoó, Anne Suárez, Amaia Satrustegi, María Teresa Manzano, Miren Josune Artetxe, Kepa Arriola, Francisco Javier Hernández, Esther Larrinaga, Carmen Larrañaga, Benito Garay and so on to almost get close to infinity. The hand program for the Bilbao Symphonic Orchestra of Accordions was arrangement by Amagoia and, in view of the results, the mend was very successful. From the Zortziko Maitetxu Mía to the Galician song Negra Sombra, passing by the pasodoble Club Cocherito, the ensalada Madrileña de Don Manolito and the final rapture of the pasacalle La Calesera, from master Fernando Alonso- (note explanatory for the youngest: there was a composer named like that before the pilot of Formula One existed)., during one hour and a half everything resulted excellent and it will take long for the attendees until they forget. An educated and folkloric concert In 1957, the Orchestra of Accordions of Hohner house in Germany offered a concert in the Malvar theatre. We recall that, among others, they perform the fire ritual dance of Falla, the Dance of the Sabre of Khachaturian and the Great door of Kiev from pictures of an exhibition of Mussorgski. Well then, at that time this formation was also holding concerts in Bilbao. And there it was where the great composer and musician, Josu Loroño, listened fascinated to them and those concerts inspired him the idea of creating an Orchestra of this characteristics and a School of Accordions (a folkloric instrument very loved not only in the Basque Country but also in the whole Cantabrian coast) Fruit of this dream and of a conscientious work, years after (1963) the Bilbao Symphonic Orchestra of Accordions was born. A formation that nowadays and after 20 years as a soloist conducts his daughter Amagoia Loroño and also as important and active part of the group, his son Asier Loroño Mugarza. This group had to be provided with an specific repertory based on musical arrangements, something that they have achieved, thanks specially to the work of Josu and his daughter Amagoia. This Orchestra belonging to Bilbao goes to Galicia for its consecutive tenth year. Sponsored by Caixanova, where they have offered this week a new concert, within the summer program, to which we will refer. The evocative impression of seeing on stage 21 accordionist, plus two percussionists (one of them also keyboard), turn out to be extremely pleasant. Based on their two last records (one not yet in the market), the concert respond to the name “From North to South and from East to West”, from where one deducts that it captures a great deal of the Spanish music. Basque and Galician music and it’s musicians shape the first act: Prelude of the II act of the Zarzuela (Spanish Operetta) El Caserio, from Jesús Guridi; Zorziko Maite, from Pablo Sorozabal; the ballad Negra sombra, of Xoán Montes, in a very wide and personal version stressed by certain symphony that was highly acclaim by the audience and make the Orchestra stand up; the Galician Paso doble Pontearas from the maestro Soutullo and Les toreadors from the Opera Carmen from Bizet which closed this first act. The second act was dedicated to the Zarzuela (Spanish Operetta): Interlude of La leyenda del beso of Soutullo and Vert, with its vast introduction; the Ensalada madriñela de Don Manolito from Sorozabal; the interlude of Black el payaso, also from maestro Sorozabal; the authentic Madrid of Federico Chueca with his Agua, cascarillas y aguardiante and Los nardos del sainete, or Las leandras from Francisco Alonso which all together make the Orchestra stand up to answer the enthusiastic applauses from the audience. The last act was formed in two pages: the paso doble Agüero, from José Franco, dedicated to the torero Martín Agüero and the pasacalle la Calesera that suppose to be the quintessence of the author, Francisco Alonso. Concluded the program, the Bilbao Symphonic Orchestra of Accordions offered two encores: the famous Zortxiko Maitetxu mía from Alonso that despite he was born in Granada where he formed himself, one can tell by this beautiful theme that he knew how to understand the spirit of the Basque music and Bajo el cielo de París, a waltz mussette paradigm of the Parisian music. To sum up: a concert that in spite of the allowances taken, rubatos and ritardandos the result has been relaxing, educated and folkloric at the same time, where one could stress the peculiarity of their sounded vision, their preparation and the virtuosity of the majority of their members. Refreshing for this time of the year. Leopoldo Centeno La voz de Galicia, July 31st 2007 |

"We had Colombia vibrating with our Basque folk music"
We are in front of a family of accordion lovers. Josu Loroño founded the Bilbao Symphonic Orchestra of Accordions in 1963, and nowadays his son, Asier, leads the Orchestra and his sister, Amagoia, takes the baton. “Since we where kids we played the Accordion. It was something natural at home, in fact, the only one that didn't play the accordion was our mum. She just listened to us. All I hope is that the family tradition continues and that my daughter Naroa, who is only a few months old will join us soon”. A few days ago, Asier, Amagoia and the forty musicians from the Orchestra headed to Bogotá to take their music to the "Basque Week". Of all the concerts given during this second edition of the "Basque Week" of Bogotá the one given yesterday in the Cathedral de la sal (Zipaquiera) in front of 2.700 persons stands out, in that Ibarretxe, the President of the Basque Country, attended.

SYMPHONIC ACCORDIONS Through it’s 42 years of musical life, the Bilbao Symphonic Orchestra of Accordions has developed an exceptional activity. Since it’s creator Iosu Loroño founded the orchestra, the accordion has been his most important task. A job that has always produced extraordinary results. They have performed hundreds of concerts, not only in the Basque Country but also all around Spain. It is well known that their shows can deeply touch their audience. Amogoia Loroño, it’s current director, is driving the orchestra on the path of artistic creativity as the qualified disciple of her father, who was a great maestro and, in a way, a hero of the accordion when the instrument was underestimated because of its connection with folk music. Bilbao Newspaper, October 2005 |
“The award ‘distinguished of Bilbao’ make us feel prophets in our own country” The Bilbao Symphonic Orchestra of Accordions have been promoting the city all around the distant corners of the world for the last 42 years. That’s why this year it's been elected as one of the five "distinguished of Bilbao". The prize was received by the daughter of the founder and current director of the band, Amagoia Loroño. Enrique Ponce among accordions In the eve of the bullfighting festival, the bullfighter Enrique Ponce received his trophy in the Montenegro Restaurant for the best performance in the "Las Corridas Generales", which the entity grants every year. Present in the memorable and fun party among others were, the president of the bullfighting ring of Vista Alegre - Matias Gonzalez, Federico Lipperheide, Alfonso Saiz Valdivielso and the members of the jury: Dolores Aguirre, Leopoldo Sanchez Gil ( president of the "Cocherito Club" ), Alfredo Casas, Alberto Vidal and the writer of this article. The maestro of Chiva had the honour to receive a surprise, which he assured would be remembered for a long time. The Bilbao Accordion Symphony Orchestra, directed by Amagoia Loroño, intervened welcoming the bullfighter with the Agur Jaunak and the pasodoble Enrique Ponce: King of Bullfighting, adapted by the director for the Accordion Orchestra and whose rhythm sounded even better than those played by the official band during the bullfight, being this considered the best in Spain. Ponce, impressed, acknowledged the presence of the Orchestra founded by Jose Loroño. The celebration concluded with the music of Suspiros de España and Martin Aguero. The applauses sounded like an accordion by themselves. Covadonga Saiz Bernuy Periódico Bilbao, June 2004 |
THE BILBAO ACCORDION SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA
PRESENTS "BILBAO ACCORDION" This is an achievement aimed "to pay homage to Josu Loroño, the man, the musician, the director, the composer and great professor who made possible the existence of the Orchestra" points out Amagoia Loroño, daughter and current director of the Bilbao Orchestra. In this way, the disc-recorded in the studio of Tio Pepe in Urduliz - gathers the music of the founder as a way to show his "creative capacity in different musical formations which go from popular folk to pieces for an accordion soloist and orchestra, and passing by other traditional rhythms like the waltz, zortzikos and the biribikeltas." As a corporate support, Bilbao Accordion includes in two of its pieces the interpretative technique of the Basque trikitilari- Kepa Junkera. "He has contributed the real oxygen of his trikitixa in a form of dialogue gathered in two themes where one can perfectly appreciate the force of a virtual soloist like him" recalls the director. Flattering words to which Junkera responds back in similar terms. "I have known them for so many years and their existence has always caught my attention inspite of the great tradition of the accordion in the Basque country. I am very interested in people who like to do music with the accordion, the kind of people who love music and their instrument. At one time, our paths crossed along and since our interests of sharing emotions through music coincide, I have integrated myself in the best way possible to share my support with the triki and with my trikitixa." But the most international accordionist of the Biskayan Capital goes further in his analysis about the existence of the Bilbao Accordion Symphonic Orchestra because "I like that there are other musical proposals different from the usual ones. It is an act of bravery that should be seen more and it is important to promote the diversity especially during the formative stage of the students encouraging them to participate in this type of projects." It is precisely in the future of music in general and of the accordion in particular, the principal purpose of the orchestra. " We use the accordion as a means to allow us, first of all for our delight, and afterwards spread that spirit and love for music to others. This being the reason why we offer around 30 or 40 performances annually as well as shows called DO RE MI KA, focused on the Biscayan chain of education. "The Bilbao Accordion Symphonic Orchestra
played before 3000 persons in Marin." Nearly three thousand persons were present at the concert offered by the Bilbao Accordion Symphonic Orchestra overfilling the central venue of the Alameda, which was converted into a beautiful auditorium under the trees where more than a thousand seats were installed, including those of the surrounding venues. The extraordinary concert of the orchestra went on for about two hours under the leadership of Amagoia Loroño. A good number of their repertory was interpreted to finish off with a series of very well known pieces of Manuel de Falla and popular pasodobles too which made the delight of the audience who after the concert maintained their endless applauses and were compensated with more musical numbers that were also very much acclaimed by the numerous and devoted public. At the end of the concert, the director herself, Amagoia Loroño, declared that she was very overwhelmed and impressed by Marin for the hospitality rendered. "We have enjoyed so much watching the public enjoy with the concert. Our objective is precisely that, I mean, make our numerous listeners here present enjoy and we have surely verified quite a lot of accordion enthusiasts." | "If Mozart had known the Bilbao Accordion Symphonic Orchestra, he
would have written music for the accordion."
Maestro Antonio Alberdi, musician and composer |
| "...it is due to the success achieved by Josu Loroño yesterday,
with his famous Bilbao Accordion Symphonic Orchestra, in the Capilla de
Musica de las Bernardas (...) devotion for this Orchestra was shown in
what almost became a conflict of public order due to the enormous
affluence of people (...) artistically speaking, the success was
expected in an orchestra which in its kind is the best one and not just
in Spain."
Diario de Burgos, 11th February 1990 |
| "The show helped once again to demonstrate the exceptional
quality of this musical group directed by Josu Loroño. Works of Mozart,
Verdi, Rossini, Tchaikovski (...) filled programme of substance which
credited the splendid features of this group of virtuosos which have
made the accordion an excellent instrument of music and of unending
possibilities."
J.A.Z., Deia 26th June 1982 |
| "This formation, already prestigious by its quality and artistic
discipline, offered a concert very much in agreement with the general
tone of the previous musical evenings which took place with growing
interest as they occurred. "
M.J. Caballero, Hierro 23rd August 1982 |
| "One of the best orchestras of its kind, among the ones that
exist in Europe nowadays, as days back was heard to say to a high
executive of the Borsini factory of Italy, a prestigious accordion
manufacturer."
Patxi García, Correo Español 18th November 1988 |
| "Every time I write about this orchestra, if you like music and
you go to one of their concerts you will get hooked on them believe me,
a gathering of memories come back to me."
José Luis Iturrieta, Deia 1st October 1998 |
| "Maestro Josu Loroño and his Accordion Symphonic Orchestra are
an unprecedented milestone withing the world of the accordion. His
adaptations of the works of the great musicians are surprisingly
rigorous and effective, having obtained an accordion orchestra capable
of playing with an expressivity and symphonic consistency unique in its
type. Things will not be the same after Josu Loroño’s Accordion
Symphonic Orchestra."
Maestro Gorka Sierra, musician and composer |
| "Bearing in mind and knowing other adaptations of doubtful
acceptance, we cannot put any objections to the personal versions
suggested by the group from Bilbao to the Nocturne Serenade and Mozart’s
40th symphony, the overture La Gazza Ladra by Rossini or the Vals of the
Flowers by Tchaikovsky (...) or the preludes to the El Caserío and La
Revoltosa by our Guridi and Chapí, with which the performance of the
Bilbao Accordion Symphonic Orchestra reached its highlight, perfectly
adjusted and with a very good twang."
